„Playgrounds“ titelt der Freiburger Gitarrist Thomas Pohl sein Debütalbum. Unter dem Namen „A Raven dreams“ hat er 9 Instrumentalsongs veröffentlicht. Alle Songs wurden von ihm komponiert und eingespielt. „Ich möchte Instrumentalmusik machen, die eingängig klingt, aber nie banal, die schön ist, aber nicht kitschig, die beim Hören immer überraschend bleibt. Meine Musik soll wie ein schöner Garten sein: Man schaut sich darin um, verweilt irgendwo, erfreut sich an Details und genießt die Abwechslung.“

"Playgrounds" is the title of the Freiburg guitarist Thomas Pohl's debut album. He has released 9 instrumental songs under the name "A Raven dreams". All songs were composed and recorded by him. "I want to make instrumental music that sounds catchy but never banal, that is beautiful but not kitschy, that always remains surprising when you listen to it. My music should be like a beautiful garden: You look around in it, linger somewhere, take pleasure in details and enjoy the variety."

„Ich nenne meine Musik Psychedelic Jazz-Rock.“ Bei „A Raven dreams“ übernimmt die Gitarre die Führung, breit unterfüttert von Synthesizer- und Keyboard-Klängen, die Thomas Pohl mit dem Gitarrensynthesizer eingespielt hat.
Das Album ist als Download erhältlich und kann bei Spotify und anderen Streaming-Diensten als Stream gehört werden.

Mit 12 Jahren entdeckt Thomas Pohl 1977 seine große Leidenschaft: die Gitarre. Zuvor hat er – durchaus mit Spaß – Akkordeon und Keyboard gespielt. Aber das Interesse an Rockmusik lässt ihm in der Frühpubertät nur eine Wahl: Gitarre. Also baut er sich selbst ein Instrument, das sich allerdings als unspielbar erweist. Zum Glück haben Patentante und -onkel ein großes Herz und schenken ihm eine Wandergitarre. Das Gitarrespielen bringt sich Thomas Pohl selbst bei. Als er 14 ist, löst die erste E-Gitarre die Wandergitarre ab und mit befreundeten Gitarristen wird regelmäßig eifrig gejammt. Mit 22 Jahren zieht er nach Freiburg zum Studium, wo er u. a. Musikwissenschaft studiert, nach 4 Semestern die wissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung mit Musik aber dann abbricht – es war dann doch zu klassiklastig. Er studiert Germanistik und Philosophie, tauscht das Griffbrett gegen die Computertastatur und stellt die Gitarre einige Jahre in die Ecke. Aber die Leidenschaft erwacht wieder: Seit 2004 ist er mit Barrel of Blues im Raum Freiburg unterwegs, mit denen er zwei CDs veröffentlicht hat, seit 2018 außerdem  mit den Disco Delights.

In 1977, at the age of 12, Thomas Pohl discovered his great passion: the guitar. Before that, he had played the accordion and keyboard – quite enjoyably. But his interest in rock music left him only one choice in early adolescence: guitar. So he builds himself an instrument, but it turns out to be unplayable. Fortunately, his godmother and -uncle have a big heart and give him an acoustic guitar as a present. Thomas Pohl teaches himself to play the guitar. When he was 14, his first electric guitar replaced the acoustic guitar and he regularly jammed with guitarist friends. At the age of 22, he moved to Freiburg to study musicology, among other things, but discontinued his academic involvement with music after 4 semesters – it was too much classical music after all. He studied German and philosophy, swapped the fretboard for the computer keyboard and put the guitar in the corner for a few years. But the passion reawakens: Since 2004, he has been on the road in the Freiburg area with Barrel of Blues, with whom he has released two CDs, and since 2018 also with the Disco Delights.

1. Sunbeams in my Pocket. Ein sonniger Song, wie schon der Name verrät. Synthie-Sonnenstrahlen bilden den musikalischen Hintergrund für entspannte Gitarrenmelodien.
   
2. Dancer. Der Tänzer in diesem Lied schwebt mit der Lead-Gitarre über den Dingen. Am Ende dreht er dann richtig auf.
   
3. Lonely Apple. Manchmal bleibt noch ein Apfel im Winter am Baum hängen und schwingt im 3/4-Takt. Traurigschön.
   
4. The Pride of Goats. Der Stolz der Ziegen ist ihre Zickigkeit, aber auch die Ruhe, die sie bei der Mittagsruhe auf dem Fels ausstrahlen.
   
5. Lightning the Rabbit. Flott wie ein Karnickel prägt das Gitarrenriff den Song. Zwischendurch gibt’s es dann etwas Entspannung mit der Nylon-String-Gitarre.
   
6. A Short Break by the Sea. Während Synthesizer-Klänge im Hintergrund die Wellen plätschern lassen, lässt die Slide-Gitarre in der Melodie die Weite der See erahnen.
   
7. Changing Colours of Life. Stoisch schlägt der Bass den Puls. Darüber gleitet das Leben, mal im 4/4-, dann im 6/8- und zum Ende dann im etwas stolprigen 5/4-Takt.
   
8. Cocktail. Ein Mix aus melodischen Passagen und rockigen Rhythmen. Eben ein Cocktail. Aber ohne Risiko eines veritablen Katers.
   
9. Reflections and Illusions. Gitarren im Gespräch, mal monologisch, mal dialogisch. Manche reflektieren einander, andere lassen sich von ihren Illusionen davontreiben.
   

1. Sunbeams in my Pocket. A sunny song, as the name already reveals. Synth sunbeams form the musical background for relaxed guitar melodies.
2. Dancer. The dancer in this song floats above things with the lead guitar. At the end he really turns it up.
3. Lonely Apple. Sometimes an apple gets stuck on a tree in winter and swings in 3/4 time. Sadly beautiful.
4. The Pride of Goats. The pride of goats is their bitchiness, but also the peace they exude when resting on the rock at noon.
5. Lightning the Rabbit. The guitar riff characterises the song like a rabbit. In between there's some relaxation with the nylon string guitar.
6. A Short Break by the Sea. While synthesizer sounds in the background make the waves lapping, the slide guitar in the melody makes you imagine the vastness of the sea.
7. Changing Colours of Life. Stoically, the bass beats the pulse. Life glides over it, sometimes in 4/4, then in 6/8 and at the end in a somewhat bumpy 5/4 time.
8. Cocktail. A mix of melodic passages and rocking rhythms. Just a cocktail. But without the risk of a real hangover.
9. Reflections and Illusions. Guitars in conversation, sometimes monologue, sometimes dialogue. Some reflect each other, others let themselves be carried away by their illusions.
